Texel
Discover Texel
Texel has a magical appeal. On this patch of land – embraced by dikes and dunes – you’ll find nature reserves, beaches, and the charm of island life. A delightful combination! That sense of freedom makes a trip to Texel unforgettable. Fancy having the sandbar De Hors all to yourself for a few hours? Shopping in Den Burg? Or uncovering stories in Texel’s museums? Nothing’s a must, everything’s allowed.
As a bonus, you return to a unique spot near De Hoge Berg. This area was shaped during the Ice Age, and its history is still visible in the rolling landscape. Forts, a historic country estate, traditional sheep sheds, a Georgian cemetery – explore them and be inspired by their stories.

Sheep Farm De Waddel
The Bakker family has been keeping sheep in the Hoge Berg area of Texel for decades. In spring, the lambs frolic happily between the traditional stone-walled fields. Only once they’re big enough and eating just grass are their mothers milked. The milk is gratefully used to produce Texel raw milk cheese. In the farm shop, you can buy a piece – and you’ll also find Texel lamb, sheepskins, and more! De Waddel also offers guided tours, lunch, or tastings upon request.

Texel Sheep Farm
You can already spot this fun farm from Afslag 5. Be sure to add it to your to-do list – here you get to cuddle lambs! The farmyard is full of animal life: from chicks and pigs to goats, cows, and ponies – all making their presence known. Inside, there’s a panoramic exhibition about De Hoge Berg, where you’ll discover everything about this historic part of Texel – home to Afslag 5. Fancy buying some lovely wool or sheepskins? Don’t forget to browse the shop!

Wezenspyk Cheese Farm
This sheep farm is a true Texel institution. The Witte family has been making Texel farmhouse cheese for forty years – and they’ve won many awards along the way. The cheesemakers love experimenting with local ingredients like samphire, seaweed, and mustard. Definitely worth a taste! You can also visit the cheese storage (with 25 tons of cheese!) and learn all about cheesemaking through a photo and video exhibition. In the fields behind Wezenspyk stands a traditional sheep shed, now turned into a sheep museum.

Viewpoint – Prins Hendrik Zanddijk
If you cycle towards the Wadden Sea, you’ll spot dune grass peeking over the dike. Wait, what’s that? A stretch of beach behind the dike? It’s the result of a collaboration between several organisations. The idea is to reinforce the dike in a natural way. This nature area spans 200 hectares – the size of 400 football fields. The new salt marsh landscape strengthens the dike and creates space for countless wading birds. The transition between sea and land has become natural once again. Plus, the view is stunning. Our tip: bring your binoculars!
